Getting Back Up and Running
Outside of work, I enjoy the physical and mental benefits of running and have been a member of a local club Swindon Striders for many years. Latterly, as the Chairman of the club.
During lockdown, like everyone, our regular club nights had to stop. As lockdown eased, getting our members out running as part of the club again was a key aim.
Providing a Covid-19 secure environment was imperative, as well as easing the fears and concerns that some members may have.
Following the guidelines set out by the Government and England Athletics, we put a comprehensive plan together. Firstly, a comprehensive risk assessment, a track and trace procedure and a club wide communication plan.
With some careful planning and the support of the membership, the club has successfully reintroduced its weekly Monday night club run.
The Rule of 6:
We split runners into groups of between four and six, to comply with social distancing and the rule of 6. Each group is lead by a nominated group leader and is allocated a designated meeting point and starting time.
The club night is different, but it offers a controlled environment for a fun, albeit socially distanced, run. Until lockdown, I hadn’t realised how much of a positive impact the running club was having for our members. Long may this continue.
