Sadly, the outbreak of Covid-19 means many professional fireworks displays have been cancelled this year.

Many are now worried that this will result in a big increase in people having their own firework display at home. It’s reported that plastic surgeons fear there will be a similar big increase in injuries. This would put further pressure on the already stretched NHS.

ABR Safety recommends you attend an organised professional fireworks display if you can.

Andy Rhoades, has been supporting a client with their plans for an organised display. The client (the owner of a stunning country house estate in Dorset), wanted the display to be safe, fun and, covid-19 secure.

Help was needed with the planning, risk assessments and application for a temporary event notice.

The Solution:

It may seem an obvious approach, but Andy reviewed the event as a potential visitor and not just as a health and safety professional.

Starting from the point the visitor parks their car, through to the point when they leave.

This approach enabled a thorough and systematic review of all the potential areas where a person (visitor or employee) could spread the virus or become infected or be harmed by the firework display.

This included:

  1. How the virus could spread from person to person through social interaction with employees and visitors
  2. How the fireworks display and associated activity could cause harm

The solution focuses heavily on:

  • Site hygiene and cleaning regimes, particularly all the touch points and the serving of food and drink orders
  • Social distancing measures, including designated 5m x 5m spectator pods/areas
  • Safe delivery of the fireworks display by a licensed provider
