Have I Done Enough?

This is a question every Business Owner and Director should be asking themselves.

When I support a business with its Health & Safety, my role centres on two things:

– Putting everything reasonably practicable in place to protect people and the working environment

– Ensuring legal compliance and driving continuous improvement

Ultimately, I’m helping leaders answer that essential question:

“Have I done enough?”

And to answer it from an informed, confident position, these are some key areas that need to be considered:

 1. Legal Duties

– Meeting core UK Health & Safety law

– Complying with industry‑specific regulations

2. The ‘Reasonably Practicable’ Test

– Have risks been balanced against time, cost, and effort?

– Can decisions be justified as proportionate and sensible?

3. Leadership & Governance

– Clear policies and expectations

– Adequate resources

– Competence across all roles

– Reviewing performance and acting on it

– Building a positive safety culture

4. Risk Management

– Suitable and sufficient risk assessments

– Controls implemented — not just written down

– Regular reviews, audits, and inspections

– Practical safe systems of work

– Competent training and supervision

5. Documentation & Evidence

Being able to prove diligence through:

– Policies

– Training and maintenance records

– Incident investigations

– Board‑level H&S minutes

6. Continuous Improvement

– Learning from incidents and near misses

– Anticipating problems, not just reacting to them

7. Engagement

– Employees involved, empowered, and listened to

– Concerns raised without fear

– Issues acted on quickly

– Visible leadership

8. Emergency Preparedness

– Clear, understood emergency plans

– Robust first aid, fire safety, and incident response

– Business continuity that includes safety

9. The Director’s ‘Sleep Test’

– Are my people competent and working safely?

– Could I justify my decisions to a regulator, a court, or a family?

– Do my actions reflect what a reasonable Director would do?

There is always more that can be done — but being able to confidently answer “yes” to these questions is a very strong place to start.
